Recovery

Recovery is the capacity of a food system to return to its previous state  after a disruption. It involves restoring essential functions and rebuilding damaged infrastructure. This element emphasizes the speed and efficiency with which a system can recover from a shock. For example, after a flood, recovery might involve providing emergency food aid, restoring damaged farmland, and rebuilding transportation networks. Adaptive capacity for effective recovery is essential, ensuring that lessons are learned and incorporated into future responses.

Examples:

  • After a drought, rapid deployment of drought-resistant seed varieties and financial assistance to farmers enables quick recovery of agricultural production.

  • Establishing early warning systems for natural disasters helps to mitigate damage and facilitate faster recovery.
